The Material girl
A veteran of the textile industry,Lizette Smook,a Cape Town native who now calls Hong Kong home, founded InnovAsians – a green sourcing operation that helps guide SMEs towards more sustainable supplyt chains,in 2007.Companies such as Orla Kiely,Shangri-La,Six Senses Resort and Swire have turned to Smook for advice on how to go green.
It might look and feel like the average towel, but the one Smook is wearing is the real deal.”The average hotel towel needs to be replaced every two years ,as they tend to hook and unravel.” Smook’s solution: a non snag towel made from organic cotton that incorporates recycled plastic from water bottles to give it durability.
Repurposed waste may not sound glamorous, but tableware made out of rice husks is a melamine-free alternative to its plastic counterpart.Smook has also developed a composite leather made from cowhide otherwise headed to landfills. The product is now used on seats of Jet Airways,Nike trainers and kids’ shoes in Marks and Spencer.
